Connectors
The entire line of Kyocera LCD modules uses only a few different connectors. LCD
connector and mating connector model numbers are definatively given in each LCD spec
in the 8. Interface Signals section and again on the Outline Drawing.
Please check the spec before ordering connectors. Use the information on this page
only as an overview or a partial list of North American sources.
V-series STN 20-wire Signal Connectors
Kyocera's V-series STN LCD modules range in size from 3.5 inch to 8.9 inch diagonals.
They all use the same 20-wire interface on the same Elco 08-6210-020-340-800 connector.
The mating connection is a 20-wire, 0.5 mm pitch, 0.3 mm thick FFC (Flat Flexible
Cable).
V-series TFT 33-wire Signal Connectors
The Kyocera V-series TFT LCD modules range in size from 5.7 inch to 7.5 inch diagonals.
They all use the same 33-wire interface on the same 33-wire Elco 08-6210-033-800 connector.
The mating connection is a 33-wire, 0.5 mm pitch FFC, 0.3 mm thick FFC (Flat Flexible
Cable).
FFCs in General
FFCs have their contacts on one surface. Insert the FFC into the Kyocera LCD so that
the contacts face the circuit board and face away from the slider. It is a general
rule that the slider or latch on the connector does not have electrical contacts, so
the electrical contacts on the FFC must therefore face away from the slider or latch.
The more common FFCs will have the contacts at one end on the same surface of the FFC
as the contacts on the other end. It is possible to build an FFC with contacts on
opposite surfaces, which will reverse the connections. Don't do it! If you design
your system expecting such a reversed cable, it is certain that someday someone will
connect it with the more common same-side cable. Symptoms are that the LCD does not
work and the FFC gets very hot.
FFC Vendors
Quadrangle Products,
+1-732-792-1234, keeps FFC blanks in stock in 3, 6, 9 and 12 inch lengths, which they
cut longitudinally to 20, 33 or any other specified number of wires. They use the
highly flexible Sumitomo FFC blanks.
Miraco, +1-603-665-9449 is
another vendor of FFCs and similar connection products.
Axon', +1-847-230-7800 can
build FFCs from scratch in their factory in France. You can choose the
thickness/flexibility of the cable and the size of the contact pads. Phone
for status of inventory in the USA.
NICOMATIC North America
manufactures FFCs in Pensylvania, +1-215-444-9580.
Sumitomo Electric Industries
manufactures highly flexible FFCs in Asia, with a Chicago-area office at 312-540-5000.
FFC Connectors
A number of manufacturers make connectors which accept the 0.5mm pitch FPC / FFC type
of connection. Kyocera LCDs typically use the slider-based
FLH series connector
from JST or the Elco slider-based
6214 series
or the flip-top-based
6239 series,
both from AVX.
JST stocks and quickly ships sample
quantities of many FFC connector sizes.
DigiKey stocks less-than-reel
quantities of JST connectors.
CFL and Inverter Connectors
There are only two different CFL connectors. The matching CFL connectors are mounted on
inverter boards, so the customer does not typically source the connectors.
Customers who mount inverter devices on their boards can find the matching CFL connector
SM02-(8.0)B-BHS
through www.jst.com.
The only other CFL connector used in current LCD products is the 3-wire BHR-03VS from JST, as used
on the TCG104VG2AA-G00. Customers who mount inverter devices on their boards can find the matching CFL
connector SM03(4.0)B-BHS-1-TB(LF)(SN)
through www.jst.com.
Kyocera brand inverter boards always ship with an input cable which has a JST
ZHR-5 connector matching the
S5B-ZR inverter input header.
The cable has flying leads for attaching to 12V backlight power source and to optional controls.
Refer to the Kyocera inverters page for details.
LED Backlight Connectors
The low-power LED backlight on the 4.7 inch STN LCDs requires a 10-wire FFC to provide
3.3 or 5.0V power to the constant current circuit, which is built into the circuit board
of the LCD.
The full-brightness LED backlight of the 057 size Kyocera LCDs is being released in
different configurations. On the first-released configuration, there is no built-in
constant current circuit. The 3 strings of LEDs are directly connected to a JST
SHLP-06V-S-B
connector by a harness of 6 wires, about 140mm long. The mating connector is the
JST
SM06B-SHLS-TF(LF)(SN), a SMD connector which would be mounted on the customers
circuit board. JST has
promised North American availability of this mating connector by mid-March 2007.
The mating connector is also available from:
MES Electronic Connect GmbH
In der Lache 24
D-78056 VS-Schwenningen, Germany
Contact: Mr. Gerhard Hirt, (hirt@mes-electronic.de)
Telephone: +49 (0)7720 945205
The second-released configuration of the 057 size LED backlight will have a constant
current circuit on a separate board within the LCD. This CCC board will have
a connector for an 18-wire, 0.5mm pitch, 0.3mm thick FFC. The customer will provide
3.3 or 5.0V power through an 18-wire FFC. This size FFC can also be
obtained from the vendors named above.
Legacy Discrete-wire STN Connectors
On the legacy 5.7" LCD line, Kyocera uses a single 15-pin
Molex connector. The matching connector
is the 51021-1500.
NOTE the pin numbers assigned by Kyocera are reversed from the pin numbers assigned by Molex.
Quadrangle Products,
+1-732-792-1234, is a good source for Molex discrete wire cables, and all other LCD-related
cables. They can help you specify the cable and typically ship a cable within a week, often
sooner.
ICT, +1-714-545-8855, is a good
high-volume source for Molex discrete wire cables, but you must draw or specify the cable
and expect longer lead times.
31-wire FFC with DF9 Connectors
Kyocera uses the VESA FPDI-1 interface on the 10.4 inch TFT VGA LCDs. This standard
specifies the
DF9-series
connectors from Hirose.
On the TCG104VG side, Kyocera uses the DF9C-31P-1V header. The mating
-31S- receptacle will typically be moulded onto a 31-wire FFC cable.
On 7.2 inch dual STN VGA panels, Kyocera uses a similar DF9B-31P-1V header which mates
with similar DF9x-31S- receptacles. However the STN interface signals are completely
different from TFT signals. To speed up customer prototyping Kyocera has the KK-1
board, which brings the signals out to a pair of Molex discrete-wire connectors.
Molex connectors. For placing the DF9B-31S-1V on production cables, consult
Miraco or
Quadrangle Products.
Bare SMD format DF9B-31S-1V connectors are available from
DigiKey.
Touch Panel Connectors
Kyocera touch panels provide a 4 pin, 1.25mm pitch FPC connection whose matching connectors are the
Elco 6216 series from
AVX and the FE and FFS series from
JST. Refer to the Kyocera
Touch Panels page.
