Custom Aspherical Image The Precision Glass Molding Engineers at at Kyocera are always ready to design a specific solution to meet our customer requirements. It is important that our engineers have an opportunity to analyze and model the performance of all aspheric designs because of some unique characteristics of our process. Specifically, the exposure to constant high temperatures causes a shift in some of the material properties of the glasses used, so it is essential that the design take these characteristics into consideration. Fortunately Kyocera has vast experience with this process and these shifts are completely understood and controlled.

The ceramic molding process allows for great flexibility in terms of the glass materials that are used. Kyocera currently uses only O'hara glasses for our molding process, including the following specific types: FSL5, NSL3, BSL7, LaL12, LaL13, SK5, BSM15, TIM2, LAH60, LAM 60. This is among the broadest selections of available glass types for molding. Should our customer require another material be added to this list, we can do this once we study the thermodynamics of the required materials, however the current selection offers a broad selection and is usually more than sufficient. Please contact Kyocera today and let us offer a solution for you.

Some of the technical parameters around which designs are based:

  1. Lens Shapes available: Double-convex, Plano-convex, and Meniscus shapes.

  2. Lens Sizes:
    • Outer Diameter: 1.8 ~ 60mm
    • Minimum Radii: 1.0mm
    • Center Thickness: 1 ~ 6mm typical, 15mm maximum (depends on design)
    • Minimum Edge Thickness: 1.0mm
    • Z-Value: >0.1 (Z=absolute(r1/R1 +/- r2/R2)/2)
  3. Tolerances - These numbers vary by design based on size and shape, but for a typical 10-15mm OD lens:

    1. Tolerance of Spherical Lenses:
      • Nmax= +/-3 fringes
      • Irregularity (Astigmatism): Maximum +/- 1 fringe
      • Accuracy of Shape: λ/10 ~ λ /4
      • Surface Roughnessave: 10-20nm
    2. Tolerance of Aspherical Lenses:
      • Nmax shift at center R= +/-3 fringes
      • Accuracy of Shape: +/- 0.15μm
      • Surface Roughnessave: 30-40nm
    3. Other tolerances:
      • Diameter: -0.005/+0.02mm
      • Center Thickness: +/- 0.03mm
      • Refractive Index: +/- 0.0005
      • Focal Length: +/- 1.5% to design amount
      • Scratch/dig: 60/30
