LED Printheads
LED printheads are often called "light bars" or LED arrays. They produce dots of light to
expose a latent image on a charged photoreceptor drum or belt. This is the same function
as the laser subsystem in a laser printer. Advantages are:
Identical dot size
No dot size distortion at ends of printline
Smaller size
Permits use of a smaller drum
No moving parts
Quieter
No spin-up delay
More rugged
Photoreceptor Drums
The electrophotographic process is centered around the photoreceptor drum. The drum
is electrically charged in the dark, then selectively discharged by LED, laser or
reflected visible light to produce a latent image. Kyocera's amorphous silicon
(a-Si) drums offer these advantage over the more common OPC drums:
Silicon carbide surface layer
10 times the life of OPC drums
Lowest cost per page
Cartridge architecture is unnecessary
Solvent resistance
Ideal for liquid toner
Quick photoresponse
Faster printing
