MATERIAL SELECTION
Zirconia and alumina ceramics offer considerable advantages over hardened or coated steels and carbides. The combination of high hardness, good to excellent surface finish, and chemical inertness provides for longer service life, reduced die wear, and improved wire quality. Impact resistance is less critical since the composite design protects the ceramic components adequately.
ZIRCONIA KZ-70 ceramic is the first choice for most non-ferrous and ferrous wire drawing applications, such as bare and plated copper wire; brass, bronze, aluminum, and nickel wire; precious metal wire made of platinum, cold and silver; steel and stainless steel wire, welding rod, and tantalum wire.
ALUMINA 99.5A ceramic is recommended for stationary guide elements, most single and multi-groove pulleys, and for cones, capstans, and rolls to draw ultrafine copper wire and tungsten wire.
