Vancouver, WA -- July 11, 2000 – Kyocera Industrial Ceramics Corporation, Electro-Optics Division, today introduced its OptoBGA ceramic package for use in fiber-optic communications networks. By providing miniaturization and Kyocera's trademark quality, the OptoBGA sets a new direction in optical packaging. The need for greater transmission capacity in the access and subscriber loop is driving demand for lower-cost components that can facilitate greater integration, functionality, miniaturization, and transmission speeds. Kyocera developed the OptoBGA to meet these challenging requirements. The OptoBGA is surface-mountable and offers excellent high-frequency transmission performance. Its multilayer-ceramic design uses stacked vias to permit three-dimensional wiring for intricate electrical paths in a small footprint. A coplanar waveguide structure yields superior, high-speed transmission from solder via to laser diode pad. In addition, Kyocera's electro-optic package manufacturing process allows the OptoBGA concept to be applied to a wide range of custom package designs. Kyocera Industrial Ceramics Corporation is headquartered in Vancouver, WA with three manufacturing plants and a network of sales offices located throughout the United States. The company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kyocera International, Inc. of San Diego, the North American holding company for Kyocera Corporation (NYSE:KYO). Kyoto, Japan-based Kyocera Corporation, the group's global parent, employs approximately 40,000 people in 25 nations and recorded consolidated sales of $7.9 billion during the year ended March 31, 2000.
