QUALCOMM Extends Kyocera's CDMA License for 3G CDMA
SAN DIEGO - November 2, 2000 - QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced an amendment to Kyocera Corporation's existing CDMA subscriber unit license agreement which expands the licenses under QUALCOMM's CDMA patent portfolio to include the development, manufacture and sale of subscriber equipment for third-generation (3G) CDMA technologies, and wireless local loop (WLL) and CDMA modem card products. Prior to the amendment, Kyocera's CDMA license covered only complete mobile subscriber units for cdmaOne applications. Under the terms of the amendment, Kyocera will pay QUALCOMM a multi-million dollar license fee and ongoing royalties at the same rates irrespective of the licensed CDMA standard.
"By extending and expanding its license agreement, Kyocera has positioned itself to use QUALCOMM's technology to support advanced 3G voice and data communications that are now rolling out," said Steve Altman, president of QUALCOMM Technology Alliances. "We are very pleased that Kyocera recognizes the necessity, importance and applicability of QUALCOMM's patent portfolio for all third-generation CDMA technologies."
"Kyocera is working to accelerate the availability of 3G subscriber products that provide advanced wireless voice communications and high-speed Internet access capabilities," said Yasuo Nishiguchi, president of Kyocera Corporation. "By receiving the license for QUALCOMM's 3G CDMA technologies, Kyocera will be able to offer a complete line of 3G wireless voice and data products to our customers and OEM partners worldwide, including WLL, embedded modules and CDMA modem card products."
