Kyocera Wireless Corp. Provides Prototype cdma2000 1X Handsets to Lucent Technologies for 3G Demonstration at CTIA

Data rates of up to 144 kilobits per second enable video over wireless networks

LAS VEGAS - March 20, 2001 - At today's opening of the CTIA Wireless 2001 industry trade show, prototype handsets from Kyocera Wireless Corp. (KWC) were used by Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) to showcase live next-generation, high speed data communications for the mobile Internet.

Making use of Lucent's live third-generation (3G) Flexent network and a technology called cdma2000 1X, the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) handsets feature data rates of up to 144 kbps, or roughly 10 times faster than today's wireless phones. In the demonstrations, the KWC handsets were used to provide high-speed data communications for readily available, Internet-capable commercial mobile computing devices.

The 3G demonstrations are taking place in the Lucent Technologies booth (#3432) at the Sands Expo Center Las Vegas, Nevada.

The demonstrations included:
  • Showing movie trailers
  • Using live video to emphasize potential home or office security monitoring services
  • Sending virtual postcards between wireless devices
  • Allowing drivers to avoid traffic by showing live video of potential hot spots
  • Previewing gaming and entertainment services, including motor races and comedy clips

"Lucent's decision to use our prototype handsets for their demonstration affirms to us that Kyocera Wireless Corp. is on the leading edge of third-generation wireless devices," said Masahiro Inoue, president and CEO for Kyocera Wireless Corp. "When the wireless carriers are ready to roll out third-generation services, we expect to provide a fully capable line of products to support them."

According to Jamie Kistler, Lucent's managing director of wireless strategic relationships, "Lucent and Kyocera Wireless Corp. share a commitment to delivering cutting-edge 3G services that will generate revenue for wireless network operators. Network operators expect great things from the new mobile Internet and we're delighted to give visitors to the CTIA show a firsthand look at cdma2000 in action."
