KYOCERA Wireless Corp. and Marvell Initiate Strategic Alliance to Enable WLAN/Cellular Convergence

SAN DIEGO -- (January 31, 2006) -- Kyocera Wireless Corp., a leading global manufacturer of CDMA wireless handsets and accessories, today announced a strategic alliance with Marvell, the leader in development of storage, communications, and consumer silicon solutions, to incorporate Marvell's WLAN technology and chipsets into a dual-mode Wi-Fi/CDMA handset platform.

Fixed-mobile convergence is attracting growing interest from wireless service providers, and especially mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs). By planning a dual-mode commercial handset based on this platform, Kyocera Wireless aligns itself to address an emerging market opportunity. According to several leading trade analyst firms, the market for WLAN-enabled cellular handsets is positioned for exponential growth, with forecasts ranging as high as 125 million dual-mode devices being shipped in 2008. This would represent approximately 15 percent of the global market for mobile phones.

"The footprint and adoption of WLAN networks is increasing exponentially and we have carrier customers who are viewing this technology as a complement to their capacity-constrained cellular networks," said Tom Zeran, Vice President of Product Management at Kyocera Wireless Corp. "Adding the feature capabilities of high-speed WLAN while reducing demand on precious spectrum is certainly an attractive proposition. We believe Kyocera is ahead of the pack when it comes to the convergence of WLAN and CDMA, and this alliance with Marvell only strengthens that position."

The vision for dual-mode WLAN/cellular devices is simple -- complement traditional voice and data services on cellular networks by offering better coverage and enhanced multimedia services when in range of WLAN networks and their data rates of up to 54 Mbps.

"The convergence of WLAN technology with traditional networks is changing the way consumers use their cellphones," said Dr. Paramesh Gopi, Vice President and General Manager of the Embedded and Emerging Business Unit, Communications and Consumer Business Group at Marvell. "The Marvell strategy is to focus on highly integrated, low-power devices which take up a minimal amount of design real estate allowing us to create solutions which deliver outstanding consumer experiences. By working with Kyocera, Marvell will be able to drive that strategy and vision deeper into the cellular device market."

Momentum behind WLAN/CDMA convergence is growing. In December QUALCOMM, the pioneer of CDMA technology, publicly announced it had joined the Wi-Fi Alliance in an effort to ensure Wi-Fi compatibility with its future MSM chipsets. The company also announced support for companion WLAN chipsets that work with its own MSM chipsets. Kyocera Wireless is a member of MobileIgnite, an independent industry organization founded in early 2005 to drive broader Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) adoption.
